Aneroid Blood Pressure Monitors

Monitoring your blood pressure in your own home and keeping a detailed record of your levels will help your doctor see how much your blood pressure changes during the course of one day.  Your doctor can use your measurements to see how well your medicine is working to control your high blood pressure.  To measure your blood pressure at home, you can use either a digital monitor or an aneroid monitor.  The aneroid blood pressure monitor has a dial gauge that is read by you or your doctor by looking at a pointer.  The cuff is inflated by hand, by squeezing a rubber bulb. 

One of the major advantages of the aneroid blood pressure monitor is that it is easily transported from one location to another.  The cuff for the monitor has a built in stethoscope, so there is no need for a separate one.  The aneroid monitors also generally cost less than the digital monitors.  Aneroid blood pressure monitors generally range in price from about $20-$50. 

The aneroid blood pressure monitor also has some disadvantages.  The monitor can easily be damaged and become less accurate, and unless your model comes with a special metal ring, the cuff is difficult for some to put on correctly.  For some, the rubber bulb may be very difficult to squeeze.  There is no computer to store your levels, and monthly averages.  The aneroid blood pressure monitor may not be suitable for hearing-impaired people, because of the need to listen through the stethoscope to the heart beats. 

There are several factors to finding the right blood pressure monitor for you.  The right cuff size is very important.  Ask your healthcare professional which cuff size you need, because if you have the wrong size, your blood pressure readings will be wrong.  The numbers on the monitor, or pointer must be easy for you to read.  If you are using a stethoscope, you must be able to hear the heart sounds through it.  If the cost were a factor for you, shopping around would be the best course of action.  The most expensive units may not be the best or even the most accurate.
